MNZ Mourns the Loss of Kara Puketapu, an Esteemed Kaumātua Māori and Advisor

Wellington, 8 July 2023 - Multicultural New Zealand (MNZ) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Kara Puketapu, a highly respected kaumātua Māori and valued advisor to our organisation. Kara's unwavering support for MNZ and his dedication to fostering multiculturalism within a bicultural framework have left an indelible mark on our work.

Throughout his tenure, Kara worked closely with the tribal council and iwi, engaging in meaningful discussions, and holding meetings at Waiwhetū Marae. His wisdom and guidance have been instrumental in helping MNZ forge strong relationships with indigenous communities and promoting harmonious coexistence among diverse ethnic groups in New Zealand.

Under his guidance MNZ developed Huarahi Hou, providing a pathway for multicultural communities to better understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and contemporary Māori culture.

Kara Puketapu passionately believed in the importance of embracing multiculturalism within the context of Aotearoa's unique bicultural heritage. He recognised that honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi is crucial in fostering understanding, respect, and unity among all peoples of New Zealand. His unwavering support for MNZ served as a testament to his commitment to bringing communities together and creating a more inclusive society.

MNZ is proud to have been working diligently under Kara's guidance to deepen the awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi among leaders from ethnic communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. In line with his vision, MNZ organised workshops aimed at enhancing the understanding and appreciation of our shared history. The workshops empowered attendees to carry Huarahi Hou perspective back to their respective communities, fostering a deeper sense of unity and multicultural appreciation.

Kara Puketapu's endorsement of MNZ's work speaks volumes about the impact our organisation has had on the community. His unwavering support and advocacy have greatly benefited not only MNZ but also the wider society. We will forever cherish his memory and continue to honour his legacy by pursuing our mission of promoting multiculturalism and social cohesion.

The loss of Kara Puketapu leaves a void that will be felt deeply by the MNZ family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his whānau, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Ngā mihi nui,
Pancha Narayanan
President, MNZ
